Cool Stuff I'm Working On

We recently worked on a “submarine hunter” data fusion system that will take input from a variety of sensors (sonar, radar, automatic identification systems) to form a common track picture for Navy commanders. We’re also working on a surface target swarm tracking system that is meant to handle challenges associated with closely spaced objects, such as when groups of small pirate boats attack a commercial or Navy ship.

Likes

Data fusion solutions that detect and manage ambiguity, rippin’ blues guitar and Australian Shiraz.

Dislikes

Unnecessary use of complicated mathematical notation, media programs with rant-to-news ratio of more than 0.01, and professional rock throwers (people who provide nothing, but try to make a living taking down other people’s ideas).
“I like Numerica because it has a great group of really talented people with whom I get to work. They bring out the best in me. I also like Numerica because it offers a place where I can be creative and entrepreneurial while working on challenging and interesting problems.”

Jason Adaska

Research Scientist

Education

M.S. and Ph.D. in Applied Math, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York

Cool Stuff I'm Working On

I develop algorithms for resource management and multi-target tracking. It’s great to work on problems that have some technical meat to them and, at the same time, involve applications that actually make a difference. I also work on proposals for new projects, which is a lot of fun since it offers the chance to be creative with a team of very bright people to break down a hard problem.

Likes

Running, cooking Indian food at home, entering chili cook-offs, and using Bayesian probability to describe social phenomenon.

Dislikes

Doing algebra without a computer, shin splints, Microsoft Equation Editor and Rachael Ray.
“The best thing about Numerica is that I have a chance to work on interesting and technically challenging problems. The small business atmosphere provides a great work environment.”

Kyle Tarplee

Research Scientist

Education

B.S and M.S. in Electrical Engineering, University of California San Diego

Cool Stuff I'm Working On

I worked with my team to design, build and field test a track and identification system for small unmanned aerial vehicles. I’m currently building two small unmanned ground vehicles with paintball guns to collaboratively engage targets. Think Terminator.

Likes

Putting the brains in the things I build to make them “dance.” The colors red and blue, but prefer to build black-painted instruments with military applications.

Dislikes

All things mundane, easy and complete.
“I like working at Numerica because you are given the intellectual flexibility to excel and the programmatic requirements to keep you focused on the goal. The end result is awesome products.”

Julie Radi

Staff Accountant

Education

B.S. in Accounting, Regis University, Denver

Cool Stuff I'm Working On

You can find me happily crunching numbers for accounts receivable, accounts payable, general ledger, account reconciliations and taxes. I don’t know how many people think accounting projects are cool, but I also work on payroll, and just about everyone thinks getting paid is cool.

Likes

Golfing, accounts that balance and pretty much all junk food.

Dislikes

Coconut-flavored anything, lost receipts and wet socks.
“Numerica is a great company because the people here are encouraged to express their individuality and creativity through their work. And the bagels every Friday don’t hurt.”

Woody Leed

Computational Scientist

Education

B.S. in Math and Computer Science, Centre College, Danville, Kentucky

Cool Stuff I'm Working On

Developing Geographic Information Systems data compression algorithms and multi-threaded pixel clustering algorithms.

Likes

Mountain biking, elegant custom software solutions and home improvement projects.

Dislikes

Poorly written computer code, paper work and home improvement projects (yeah – it’s a love/hate thing).
“Why do I like working at Numerica? I get to develop complex algorithms during the week, and then climb, bike and ski the Rocky Mountains in my down time. What more can a guy ask for?”

Jeff Poore

President

Education

B.S. in Management, Colorado State University, Fort Collins

Cool Stuff I'm Working On

Developing a strong organizational model to drive innovation and continued growth, and positioning Numerica as a leader in national defense technology.

Likes

Leadership, people-building, family, riding motocross, doing Cross-fit and training in mixed martial arts.

Dislikes

People who say “I can’t,” bureaucracy and Brussels sprouts.
“Even in tough times, good companies thrive if they have talented, dedicated people working on things they care about. Great people and creative thinking have always been at the heart of Numerica’s success.”

Nick Coult

Program Director

Education

M.S. and Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics, University of Colorado, Boulder B.A. in Mathematics, Carleton College, Northfield, Minnesota

Cool Stuff I'm Working On

Putting together a Google Earth-based visualization tool for tracking, and seeing it work on live radar – all in a few days.

Likes

Iterative methods for solving linear systems, homemade traditional Neapolitan pizza and Colorado weather.

Dislikes

Lima beans, emoticons and subtractive cancellation.
“Working at Numerica is the best job I’ve ever had. I can’t imagine working with a smarter, more talented and technically creative group of people. There’s always something interesting going on here.”

Marcio Teixeira

IT Engineer

Education

B.S. and M.S. in Computer Science, Colorado State University, Fort Collins B.S. in Electrical Engineering (Computer Engineering Concentration), Colorado State University, Fort Collins

Cool Stuff I'm Working On

As the IT guy, I’m always working on cool stuff. Right now I’m evaluating Linux-thin clients for one of our projects, and I’m migrating our servers to a virtualized environment.

Likes

Everything related to technology, and I hope to be around when all those cool things from science fiction finally take place – because it’s not a matter of if, but when!

Dislikes

Meetings, large groups, idle chit-chat, sports and other unnecessary expenditures of energy.
“The great thing about Numerica is there are so many opportunities to learn new things and your job title isn’t a box you’re stuck in. For my first couple years at Numerica, I worked as a software engineer, but I had an itch to get into information technology. So, now here I am as the IT manager and having a blast!”
